STARTING QUARTERBACKS WHO MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

As expected, there have been numerous quarterbacks on the move since free agency started yesterday. Many of the top tier quarterbacks ended up where most people thought they would: Matt Hasselbeck to the Titans, Donovan McNabb to the Vikings, and Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals (the latter two are unofficial but are as good as done deals). However, there are some lower level quarterbacks on the move that could end up starting for their respective teams. Here are some of the more interesting quarterback situations:

Seattle Seahawks
QBs on their roster: Charlie Whitehurst
Who everyone expected them to go after: Kevin Kolb, Matt Leinart
Who will most likely be their starter: Tarvaris Jackson

Everyone thought that the Seahawks would take a run at Kevin Kolb since they were expected to let Matt Hasselbeck leave. However, it is reported that they really didn’t show much interest in him once free agency opened up. They were also tied to Matt Leinart, considering his connection to coach Pete Carroll. They decided to go in a completely different direction and signed Tarvaris Jackson to compete with Charlie Whitehurst, whom they gave up a second round pick to get just a season ago. It does not look like they will go after another quarterback in free agency, except for someone to be their third string quarterback. Maybe they end up going after a guy like Marc Bulger, but it is unlikely at this point.

Washington Redskins
QBs on their roster: John Beck
Who everyone expected them to go after: Rex Grossman, Vince Young
Who will most likely be their starter: Kellen Clemens

No, you did not read that wrong. I’m sure most people missed this headline, but the Redskins signed Kellen Clemens this afternoon. Clemens was probably the most talented third string quarterback last year, which is a list that includes John Beck. This is by no means a ringing endorsement for Clemens, but he is no doubt better than John Beck, who is the only other quarterback on the Redskins’ roster at this point. The Shanahans gave rave reviews of Beck over the last few months, but I am not buying it. If he was so good last year, why did they start Rex Grossman over him? I could still see them going after Vince Young, once he is released, or Marc Bulger, both of whom are significantly better options than Clemens or Beck, or even Grossman for that matter.

Cincinnati Bengals
QBs on their roster: Carson Palmer, Jordan Palmer, Andy Dalton
Who everyone expected them to go after: No one
Who will most likely be their starter: Bruce Gradkowski

Everyone assumed that the Bengals starting quarterback would be either Carson Palmer or first round pick Andy Dalton. It looks as if Carson is going to retire rather than be forced into staying with the Bengals. So now the assumption is that Dalton is their man. However, Dalton ran a spread offense at TCU and is not ready to run a pro-style offense. On the other hand, Gradkowski is a great leader and an underrated player. He also is a great fit to run Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense, which is similar to what he ran with the Raiders. I have no doubt that he will beat out Dalton for the starting position, at least for the first half of the year or until he gets injured.

Miami Dolphins
QBs on their roster: Chad Henne, Pat Devlin (rookie from Delaware)
Who everyone expected them to go after: Anyone better than Chad Henne, meaning a lot of options
Who will most likely be their starter: Kyle Orton

After being a break out candidate last season, considering the Dolphins threw buckets of money at Brandon Marshall, Henne failed to meet even the lowest expectations, with 15 touchdowns to 19 interceptions. With a strong run game, a lot of good receiving options, and one of the better offensive lines in the NFL, it is almost inexcusable to put up those types of numbers, hence why the Dolphins have been searching high and low for a replacement for him. Kyle Orton seems to be their guy. The Dolphins are trying to put a deal together to pry him away from the Broncos, and he could end up being the best deal of all of the available quarterbacks this offseason. Orton had success in his one season with Brandon Marshall, so maybe they can find some of that old magic. Last season Orton was making a run at Dan Marino’s single season passing record, so it would be interesting to see what he could do with Marino’s old team.
